Today Salma Yaqoob stepped back as a councillor for Sparkbrook due to health problems.
I have photographed and met her several times over the last year and always perceived her as an upright, positive whole hearted and passionate women. I always saw her as a brave, honest and authentic woman working hard for her ward and her believes in peace, racial and sexual equality. I was particular touched speaking with her during a youth protest this Spring on the day some press fell over her after a local Liberal Democrat councillor had accused her with reactionary, racist, slanderous lies. On the day she seemed very sensitive and humanly hurt without hiding these emotions. Instead of being reactive she dealt patiently with the accusations and her believes over the days and weeks after the incident until the issue was resolved.
Respect and all the best, I sincerely hope she can recover her health soon and continue to stand up for her believes and struggle for peace in whatever way that might be.
